Japan's Anger Management Smackdown Contest
The World Chabudai-Gaeshi Tournament is an annual event in Japan wa held 15 years in Yahaba, Iwate Prefecture, where contestants compete in the art of... flipping tables! The current record for the farthest thrown object is 8.29 meters, held by Shinya Chiba, who shouted "Go Big Bulls!" (her favorite basketball team) as she flipped the table.
The competition is inspired by the Japanese phrase "chabudai gaeshi", which literally means "upending the tea table" and is used to describe a sudden outburst of anger or frustration. That's right, this quirky competition is a unique way for people to express their anger, frustration, or even hopes and dreams, in a fun and cathartic way. Here's how it works:
Participants sit at a traditional chabudai (low table) with fake food arranged on top. A host dressed in traditional tea ceremony attire sits patiently beside them. On cue, the host gently taps the contestant's shoulder and says "Stop it!". This is the signal to unleash their inner table-flipper! The contestant flips the table as far as they can, sending the fake food flying.
The most important thing is that when the table flips , participants are allowed to shout ANYTHING. Many people sign up just for this. Many people shout “I hate my boss”, some funny ones say “I want to get a girlfriend”. The most common shout is that to be promoted at work.
How to win:
The distance the food travels (usually a designated object like a plastic fish) is one part of the score. Judges also consider the passion and theatricality of the contestant's performance.
▼ The prize: A table
