Shanghai Woman Hoards Millions Yuan in Online Purchases
A 66-year-old Shanghai woman, identified as Ms. Wang, has garnered significant attention in China for spending over 2 million yuan (approximately $280,000 USD) on online shopping. Her purchases are so extensive that she's had to rent a second apartment solely for storage, sparking public discussion about the mental well-being of the elderly.
Wang, who lives alone, has accumulated an enormous volume of mostly unopened packages over several years, turning her home into a cluttered warehouse. Neighbors have complained about odors and pests attracted by the mess. Wang admits to a shopping addiction, finding excitement in spending, and claims she intentionally squanders her money to deter relatives from asking for loans. She prefers buying cosmetics, health supplements, and gold jewelry during live streams.
Her home is reportedly filled to the ceiling, leaving her no space to sleep, and even her underground garage is full. With her daughter living abroad and other relatives seemingly disinterested, the local housing committee attempted to help with a cleanup last year, but the hoarding worsened.
Psychiatrists suggest such behavior often stems from depression and social anxiety, noting that treating hoarding disorder is a lengthy process. Social media users largely attribute Wang's issues to loneliness, urging younger generations to pay more attention to their elderly relatives.
